Pages 61-63:

Choose 2 guests of Gatsby's parties and write the following:

1. The name of the character

2. What is suggested by the name itself (e.g., the Leeches--like the animal, a blood sucker, needing a host to feed from)

3. What is suggested by the description (if any is given)

4. An inference about the character (what Fitzgerald may have intended us to think about the character) (The Leeches--suggest, perhaps, people who are freeloaders, who use up what the host has to offer--repellent and a nuisance)

When finished describing your character, write 4 conclusion about all the guests in general, addressing these questions:

  • What do you think is Fitzgerald's reason for describing people in this way?
  • What does it suggest about the time period and the values and morals of these people?
  • What is the difference between East Egg names and West Egg names?
